Extensive_description_of_the_dataset
|
The dataset is compiled in a SQLite database (a R script to extract data in csv tables is available jointly with the database).
The core of the Kiel Bay database comprises detailed dietary information based on stomach contents from 22,185 fish individuals of six species: "Gadus morhua", "Merlangius merlangus", "Limanda limanda", "Pleuronectes platessa", "Platichthys flesus", "Hippoglossoides platessoides".
Fish individuals were sampled using systematic and standardised bottom trawls carried out year-round between 1968 and 1978. Stomach contents were identified to the highest taxonomic resolution possible and wet mass determined when possible. Hence, the database includes body size data for all fish (i.e. predators) but also for prey items from the stomach contents.
In addition, the database contains independently-sampled abundance and body mass information on the benthic invertebrate (i.e. prey) fauna. Benthic fauna was obtained at the trawling locations using classical 0.1 m² van Veen grabs.
