* Dataset_title Dietary information from the benthic community of the Western Baltic (1968-1978)
* Short_abstract Compiles the stomach contents of 6 demersal fish species from the Kiel Bay in the Baltic Sea, as well as the abundances of their prey in the environment. Both stomach contents and information on prey in the environment are completed with body mass and biomass measurements, as well as local temperature and salinity conditions. Data sampled between 1968 and 1978.

Extensive_description_of_the_dataset The dataset is compiled in a SQLite database (equivalent csv files are also available and the R script use to extract data to csv tables is attached). The core of the Kiel Bay database comprises detailed dietary information based on stomach contents from 22,185 fish individuals of six species: "Gadus morhua", "Merlangius merlangus", "Limanda limanda", "Pleuronectes platessa", "Platichthys flesus", "Hippoglossoides platessoides". Fish individuals were sampled using systematic and standardised bottom trawls carried out year-round between 1968 and 1978. Stomach contents were identified to the highest taxonomic resolution possible and wet mass determined when possible. Hence, the database includes body size data for all fish (i.e. predators) but also for prey items from the stomach contents. In addition, the database contains independently-sampled abundance and body mass information on the benthic invertebrate (i.e. prey) fauna. Benthic fauna was obtained at the trawling locations using classical 0.1 m² van Veen grabs. The file "metadata_variables.csv" describes the variables, data type, and units, as well as the reason for missing values (identified with "NA"). All CSV and R files are encoded as UTF-8.
